Top quality watches are the symbol of social status, I guess. That’s why they have the diamond or gold on the dial and face of the watch, and the watch strap is always made of fine leather.

It’s important in some occasions. For example, you have to wear a watch to keep track of time during an exam, since phones are off the bounds. But in the course of daily life, smartphones come in handy to check time, since watches can be a burden on the wrist.
